Last weekend I was trying to turn my 2nd pepper mill. Was working on the lid and catch!! Ok back up, deep breath, I can fix this. Almost done, catch!!!! Loud grow, deep breath, told myself to walk away. Didn't listen. 3 more times I said walk away. Then I got stupid. Lost my cool and used my gouge as a club on a spinning lathe. NOT SMART!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tried to pull back at the last micro second. Then saw the broken tool, tossed it on the floor and threw my face shield.

DEEP BREATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! turn everything off, walk away.

Lesson learned. DON'T TURN ANGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guess I will be turning a new tool handle this weekend. Will have to use a different technique as this was my largest spindle roughing gouge.

Maybe others can learn from my mistake. This is a hobby for fun and stress relief. Not for inducing stress and destroying tools.

If only pride and a handle got damaged, its all good. Lesson learned. Ive been there, we all always need to learn to listen to that inner voice of warning.

This lesson will stick with you i suspect. Glad you were not hurt. The tool is replaceable or fixable. I would add to that, don't turn while distracted, tired, any alcohol, or taking any kind of pills that warn of operating machinery.

Thank you for the leson learned.......will be showing this to my son so he can learn without going through this.

Everything broken can be fixed. Your pride will also heal. Happy as can be, that you were not hurt. Next time.....listen to that little voice.

Really:confused::eek::confused:

I must be doing something wrong.

Except for the "Destroying Tool" part, I can relate. But most of mine have been ruined pen parts.

Anyway, glad the only thing hurt was the tool.

I think it is fun to whip a truestone pen blank against a concrete floor when you crack it on the drill press. Good times. (Not recommended of course) :)

Glad the only thing you bruised was your ego. Years ago I decided that I wasn't going to do any woodworking if I was tired, hungry, or upset. The times when I push it (like turning later at night, or putting off lunch for a bit on Saturdays), usually I get a reminder of some kind to give it a rest and come back later.

Redemption.

Broken Handle, new handle and the salt grinder that was the target.

Grinder is figured maple with WTF finish.

New tool handle is from an oak (I believe) that I found in my grandfather's carpentry shop. 1 coat of weathered oak stain and 3 coats of rattle can lacquer.

Spent yesterday trying to finish a wood and metal coffee table. My first welding project ever. One thing led to another, and another, and thrown wire cutters. I was really getting irritated. I packed up the welder closed the shop and will came back to it after vacation.

Still super frustrated but the welder who rents space from us said it was not too bad and it can be cleaned up. At least I stopped before I ruined it.
