the lathe fairy visited my shop today, i am finally set up to turn between centers, and i must say, i'm sold. i also had a chance to turn some new blanks i got a few weeks ago so i combined them in the same post. hope i don't get in trouble for it.

the pen is an atrax with elm burl. and i don't think this pen would have survived on my mandrel. just i feeling.
hope you enjoy.

Hi Marc; You are really only partially set up to turn between centres.

You need some of johnnycnc's steel and delrin bushings, and I'd suggest his carbide dead centre as well.

His cnc'd bushings (no mandrel possible) will ensure that you won't expand the tube at either end of the blank by tightening up your tailstock too tight!

you sound like your getting a cut,. lol. this one was turned with bushings. just didn't take a picture of that step. i also plan to upgrade to carbide. but for around 6 bucks for hss, i thought it would be a good place to start, i will definitely check him out though.

TBC is the only way....no more bent mandrel rods(more money for good kits)!

Love the timber, sure has plenty going on with it from spalting to 'eyes'!!

Scott (purty finish too) B

That is a fine looking piece of burl. I ordered a few of the Atrax kits today I like the way they don't take from the wood. Very simple metal and that lets the wood speak for itself! Very nice.
