I found a metric 35 piece tap and die set for a reasonable price. The set cost less than purchasing just ONE from one of our supporters so I assume there is something not right. It is titanium Nitride Coated Alloy - is this the issue?

Size starts at 6 X .75 and goes UP.

John -- the quality and tolerances on most of the low cost machine tools is a crap shoot. I like to use a high power magnification to look at teeth and edges. Avoid the really rough and poorly formed ones. Look for even plating as the heat treat outcomes tend to be eratic, and they use the TiN to compensate/hide problems. If you have a decent reliable micrometer that is good to check measurements (micrometer is better than low cost calipers for precision measurements.

You can find some nice pieces, but may have to sort through a lot of rejects.

Ken: After comparing sizes to postings you and others submitted I find that these have course threads (1 or 1.5 or 1.25 or 2.0) and they obviously are not triple starts. Thank you for waking me up to this matter. I am going to pass on this set. It is 45 piece metric starting at 6 X .75, 6 X 1.0 as the smallest. The guy says he used two of the sizes only once so they should be in good shape. Still are in the case. However, I am wondering if this could be a starter set??

Be very sure it contains the exact threads you want, .75 if fairly coarse for a 6mm, and they usually don't contain the fractional metric sizes (i.e. 6.4 or 6.5 x .5) which need to be purchased independently rather than in a set.

You are right. I went to Indy Pens an are working with them in setting up an account to make the purchases.

Thank you.
