Tail Stock Sticking

Yesterday, I was making a pepper mill and was drilling out the core on the lathe. I caught some kind of crazy catch and the tail stock started spinning until it unwound completely and jammed, bring the head to a halt.

When I undid that mess, I found that it was taking a ton more effort to advance the tail stock than normally. And after a bit I noticed it was sticking, only a touch... maybe 1/16" at a time.

I don't really understand how the tail stock works to try to attempt some kind of maintenance on it. There is a set screw on the crank, but removing that didn't yield any results.

I have a Jet 12/20vs if that helps.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Pull the tail stock from the lathe, flip it upside down and clean it. After that take some moly dry lube and spray on the bottom areas, you can see where it rubs against the bed of the lathe. You should notice some significant improvements.

Maybe there is a mangled E-clip or C-clip on the back end and if there is and you remove it however it is necessary, the threaded part will slide out and you can get your parts list and order parts.

The clip was fine and we got it out. We simply rolled the lead bar on the table and you could see right away it was all catywompus.

I'm pretty impressed you knew there was an E-clip in there!
