Tail stock faulty?

I am having a problem centering drill bits when drilling out pen blanks. Not every time, but often enough to frustrate me. I tinker around with the tail stock, moving it somewhat until it seems centered, and then it is okay.

I know I shouldn't have to do that. What are the possible things that could be causing my problem?

Is the drill bit straight? Try rolling it on something flat (glass etc), if there is a problem with the bit, it will show up immediately, it won't roll properly!
I've had NEW bits that have been bent!!!!
Have you tried cleaning the Morse taper in the tailstock as there could be a bit of crud/shaving/ built up grime in there. Use some paper towel and DNA to clean it out, if there is still something in there, you may have to obtain (beg, steal, borrow) a morse tapered reamer they are available in plastic to help clean it out. These would be the main reasons why it is out.
Once you have it clean, get 2 solid centres to align your tailstock, point to point. If you are still having problems let us know and will try to help.

Check your bed ways also. There may be a burr. crud, or dried glue in one spot. If you have problems with certain bits it may be the ways have a bad spot where the tail stock needs to be when you mount that bit.
