Anyone think this thing is worth the time and effort to clean up and restore.She works like a champ.Just nasty and rusted.Don't know how old it is but it has a cast top and I could'nt beat the price-FREE.

Induction motor, cast top. Low end fence. The holes are there for a better fence. At least it doesn't have the finger grabbing open hole wings. Those were designed by a sadist.

Does it run? Now is the time to check blade alignment, as the bottom of that top most likely is in the same condition.

If so, get ready for fun! Take off the wings, clean and prep and paint.
WD-40 and carborundum paper (black, wet/dry) If you have a palm sander, makes job easier. Wet surface and sand. Messy, need bundle of bounty...

New blade and after market fence system and you have a killer saw. Depending on the fence you choose, you can have a great saw for about $200.00. Walk into Sears and give about $600.00 for new...
 
Looks just like the Craftsman I got new (I think the early 70's). I since gave it to my Son, and it's waiting for a trip to Idaho for him whenever someone goes that way. It worked well for me for many years--I think the motor on it was getting a little tired.

Mine had a splitter with a guard---do you have it?? May be able to get one from Sears parts if not.
 
Yes it runs great.Already have a new blade I can put on it.No,what you see is what I have.No splitter or guard.I could probably find those somewhere.The mitre is in really good condition.Fence needs to be replaced in my opinion.Is it worth the effort?Like I said I could'nt turn it down for free.
 
Kind of looks like the splitter may have broken off from your photo. Pretty sure it attaches to the 2 vertical bolts just below the middle of the cast iron table in the back. The splitter of course, has the antikickback parts which I think are important. Mine had a great deal of use---hopefully your motor is good---probably be able to tell better when you put a load on it and rip a piece of wood.

As I recall on mine, the handles to lower and raise the blade and to put the blade at an angle broke. Your's look original. Sears used to carry metal ones I used as replacements on mine---no sense changing them though if they're working ok.

Oh, also, looks like you're missing a guard for the belt---there's a plastic guard part that clips onto the other part that's there.
 
Oh, too, that's just like the fence mine had and it worked well for me for what I used it for--you probably already know--but to tighten it or loosen it you just turn the handle (it screws in and out).
 
Looks just like my saw (when I got it). Yes it is worth the effort.
Firts task after cleanup is to replace the fence. Go with the best you can afford.
I used the saw with that fence for about 3 years and always hated the saw. After replacing the fence I love the saw.
I also would look at either replacing the splitter/guard with OEM replacement or something eles if needed.
Also might want to put one of the link belts and machined pully on the motor. That made mine run much smoother.

White Vinegar and steel wool also works well to take off the rust. After you scrub off the rust sprinkle talcum powder all over the top (real talcum not the stuff with cornstarch in it) and let it sit a half hour or so. This will pull any remaining liquid out of the pores of the cast iron. Vacuum it off then put a coat of wax and buff off or use some other top protector. the top will be smooth and slick provided the top isnt pitted.
 
Ronald, since it works, that's a great find even with the missing parts. Follow the advice above for cleaning up the table and keep it waxed. With the exception of the fence, those can be replaced by your own shop made versions, or from third party after market vendors. Check Peachtree for availability. For a fence, check all of the Lowe's in your area. If you get lucky you may be able to find a sweet deal on a Beisemeyer fence. They list for over $400, but a few months ago many Lowes stores were clearing them out for $80. If they don't have any left, you should be able to pick up a good used t-square fence that you can make fit easily enough. Check ebay and Craigslist.
 
Hi Ron, I bought that same saw in the early 70's from Sears. I used it in a cabinet shop for many years. I went through three motors and replaced the bearing twice. I put a 52" Biesemeyer on it when it was new. Two years ago it wore out to the point that it was not worth fixing again. The motor and the Biesemeyer is on a shelf in the garage. I am going to sell it this spring. If you are interested, $100 plus shipping. I will pack it up and ship it. I have no idea how much shipping is. The face of the fence is in great shape, no saw marks. If you are interested PM me.

I have the same saw I just picked up form my dads shop, if he does not want the Bissemeyer fence you have I would like a picture and a shipping quote to 30144. My fence is so bad I have to tap it with a mallet to get it to move, but the saw runs great.

Hi, i have had the old craftsman saw for a long long time.changed the fence out to an Excalibur fence system and put a side router table on and it runs and cuts accurate.If you can get beise for that price i would jump on it in a NY minute. Carl

Ron, you didn't respond with a PM about the fence. I sent one to you. Andy indicated he was interested.
My daughter is getting married this Saturday, so I am very busy this week. I will crate it next Monday and ship it to whoever wants it.
Ron and Andy, keep in mind that the rails on this fence are 6' long. It takes up a lot of room. I had a router table set up on the right side of the fence. That worked great. You could cut the rails if you want a shorter fence.
