It seems like I'm always reaching for stuff of the shelf I have above my lathe or over on a table I have next to it. When I do put things on the ways of the lathe they always end up falling through the gap in the middle. I had some scrap 1/4" plyboard and some pieces of cut down 2Xs laying around so I cobbled together a little table that can slide the length of the bed extension.

I can slide it closer when I need to use it and then back out of the way when I don't. On the rare occasion I need to use the full length of the bed it's only about 10.5" X 10.25" and I can lean it up in the corner til I need it again.

The board in the middle is the guide and the narrower/shorter board on the front is what keeps it from flipping over if I was to put a lot of weight on it.

This is the underside... the shorter board goes toward the front... it's shorter so I can slide the table all the way to the end without getting caught short by the casting of the bed being wider where the legs attach.

pick-up

I'll bet I have thought bad thoughts & stopped & stooped a dozen times a already this week to pick up items that fell thru the gap! Good idea!

I just put a board on the lathe bed, but have almost knocked it off a few times. I think I'll add the 2x4's on the bottom to prevent that. Thanks for the prototyping.
