Anyone know what this tool is?
I was at the hardware in Hartville today and they had these on a 50% off table. It looked like my future small size tool rest so I bought one.
The bar is about 7/16 in diameter and after turning an adapter for my metric size banjo it works very well.
I tried to thread the aluminum piece but what I thought was 3/8-24 turned out not to be. It is probably metric and just a bit bigger.
So, I drilled the adapter just undersize and drove it in.
At 2 buck each I may go get a few more for spares.

I have made handles like that to help carry heavy things like heads on a Cummins diesel. Helped to lift them into place. easier on the fingers since they dont have to be under the head when your trying to set it back on the gasket to bolt it down.

It could be for any number of things. When I was working in a foundry the pattern shop used handles exactly like this to lift patterns into the frames for the molding machine. From the looks of the weld it appears to be home made.

Haven't seen one of these in years ...
Used them in the 'ol days quite extensively but can't remember
for what.
It's what's known as a "SCHMEGGMATUS" and they were thought
to be quite uncommon/rare. You might have stumbled onto
something here. I'd consider taking it to the "Antiques Roadshow"
in your area for an appraisal. Good luck !!!

I have no idea what that last reply was about.
I doubt it is an insertion tool for re-thread coils because those typically have a slot on the bottom to engage the coil.
I may go back and get another one or two and ask if anyone knows what they are from.

On the 50% off table at hartville there were 2 boxesof inserts next to those handles. They arent helicoils but wood inserts.

I can tell you exactly what it is, it as an insertion handle for threaded wood inserts made of brass. I have one that fits 1/4-20, and 3/8-16.

OK Mike.
Sorry about that. Your first comment seemed a bit vague. Didn't know you were referring to the store.
I suppose that I can assume it is not hardened steel but it seems to hold up better then the tool rest that cam with the HF lathe.

Thanks Tim and thank you Maxwell for the link and picture.

Like Charley said, it is a tool for installing threaded inserts. It will only fit one particular size of insert (ie 3/8-16) which matches the threaded portion at the bottom. You screw the insert onto the threads and then you have a handle to drive the insert into the wood without damaging it, rather than trying to use a screwdriver.
