I was looking for a planer, and was considering a lunchbox (Dewalt 735). But then I saw a Delta RC-33 (13" - 2 HP, 220 V) on Craigslist. The seller was retiring from his cedar shutter business and selling off his machinery. I went to take a look at it. It was in GREAT condition. He said they used it very little after they bought it new as they shortly had a huge belt sander custom made for their shop. So it had been sitting in their shop all these years. I ran a 3" x 3" x 30" thick piece of hard maple through it. It did a fine job, no snipe, and just a little tear out at some curly spots. So I bought it from him - $700. Just a little bit more than what I would have paid for a Dewalt lunchbox, but much heavier and more power - and I'm sure quieter. I haven't used it yet, since I need to put in another 220 line, which I'll be doing in another couple of weeks.
One thing I'm wondering - would it be beneficial to replace the HSS knives with carbide tip blades? The carbide tip knives are pricey (about $150).
