How long before one of you all makes one of these...

I wonder what it's made out of.

I'm guessing it's mold cast resin filled with stone dust. As a one of a kind thing, I would want a whole lot more than $20 for it. Using the original carving to make molds and then crank them out by the hundreds (or thousands) using slave labor could leave some decent profit in a $20 pen.

Last year I did some wood spirit carving on spindles and decided to see what it might look like on a pen sized piece. It didn't look too bad, but it was a really uncomfortable pen. I'll have to see if I still have pictures of it (I know, without them it didn't happen ).

I've actually got some 3D textured pens planned using Virage kits. I'm just waiting for my molds (prototype should be arriving today, thanks Fred). Here's a picture of a bowl done with a similar concept (it's carved / turned Mahogany).

The pen will be a little smaller diameter .

If the relief carving is small enough, it's really not that uncomfortable (Least not to me).

Hi Dawn - You pen looked good...at least from what I think I saw in the picture.

I suspect my relief wasn't "low" enough. Especially right where the pen rested on the skin between my thumb / finger. Have you ever tried any chip carving on a pen. That seems like it might have a lot of potential.

If you want 3D blanks then it's hard to beat Charlie and Alton of Creative Dimensions. Perhaps not the easiest blanks to finish, but very well worth the effort.

In wood? LOL heavens no I don't have the hand skills for that Ed.

However, I have thought that some of the designs that you would normally find in chip carving would look really cool in metal. And the relief would not have to be so high as to make it uncomfortable to hold.
