I have a stronghold chuck and would like to buy some spigot jaws for it. I was wondering if for drilling pen blanks would the smooth jaws or the serrated jaws be better.
I am probably opening a can of worms here, but would like the opinions as I hope to order tomorrow.

Either on of them will leave marks with the serrated being the worst of the two. But if there's enough wood so that you can turn away the marks then it would depend on what else you might do with them. I think the profiled can do more than the smooth, and be a bit more secure.

I've got a stronghold. that's one heck of a pen blank chuck >:-p

Ya, it's a bit of overkill, but it was a birthday present.
I hope to use it as a clamp to drill my blanks on the lathe. I got to make it look like I want to use it you know. :D
So, there is one vote for serrated.
I dont' think one would need to clamp too tightly to drill like that, so the marks shouldn't be to severe.
