We are looking to get something to store the pens in once they are completed. We have several in a wooden box that was custom made and of course they rub against each other and damage the finish. Our display stand doesn't hold everything that we have completed. We thought about getting a "pen binder" like this one: http://www.woodturningz.com/products/BINDER24P.jpg

however, my wife said she read some where on here that these binders were leaving black mars on the finish of pens and some pens even had to be redone (finish removed and reapplied). Input here would be greatly appreciated. We really didn't want to store each pen seperately as we would like to be able to open up something and show off several pens at one time - ie: going to a retailer and displaying several pens for consignment etc.

Thanks
Mike & Linda

I have had one of these binders for over a year and have not had any problems with black mars on any of the pens. I have use the binder with both wood and plastic pens. I normally use a BLO/CA finish. I don't know if the binder affects other finishes.

I keep my pens in one of these and the only problem was with a couple lacquer finishes that were only a few weeks old when I put it in the case. The pressure of the elastic band caused it to "melt" down into the lacquer, ruining the finish.

I have never had a problem with CA finishes but suspect some of the friction polished pens might have the same problem with the elastic digging in.

George has it right, It does seem to bruise the lacquer finish. I use one of the binders to store pens in and have not had a problem as long as it is not lacquer. Craft Supply sells a roll that holds 18 pens and is only $6.35 I have a couple and they do not damage the pens with the lacquer finish. Here is a Link to them.

We just got 3 large salesman's case 2 with 1" trays & 1 with 2" trays with velvet pads form nile corp.
I need to sew the elastic on but that isn't a big deal to me. The bags are nice and thick, the trays are very sturdy and they nest together. The large bags hold 17 1" trays or 9 2" trays.

We have about 10 of the pen rolls from CSUSA, we like them except you can't see the pen when in them. In order to show them to someone you have to slide them out.

Hope this helps, just my 2 cents worth.

I usee the cases sold by CSUSA

I also use the pen rolls that Jerry talked about. I fold up the rolls and keep them inside the cases. They keep the pens from moving around. When I'm showing the pens I unfold the rolls and set the pens that the people are looking at on the roll. Word of caution though, I use both the 24 and 30 cases and both handles came loose and I had to reset the screws. The screws were way to short.

I also have one of these cases and never had a problem. Make for a nice presentation when you open it up to show a customer.

If you put a lacquered pen into the elastic before it has fully cured (30+ days) it will "bruise" the finish. Once the lacquer has fully cured, it is usually OK for short periods. DAMHIKT [:D]

Looks like everyone learns something out of this discussion. I've been wanting a few of those hard sided cases to store some of my larger pens in and the prices are great.

Mike and Linda, If you are making any of the larger diameter pens like CSUSA's Gentleman, Statesman, Emporer of PSI's Majestic, I would really look into the hard sided cases mentioned above.

The soft sided cases will hold the larger pens but not on both sides! In order to zip the case you have to have thin pens on one side if thck pens are on the other side.
