I'm making a mechanical pencil for my niece and using a purple starlite blank from AS. I'm wondering if anyone has turned these blanks before and, if so, are they transparent? I just need to know if I should paint the tubes before gluing them in. I only have one blank and I don't want to make any mistakes!

Thanks!

Erin, If you're turning a slimline pencil, by all means paint the tubes. The Starlite blanks appear opaque but as you remove material and get closer the the tubes the blank will become transparent. Imagine the blank as a bunch of flecks of color suspended in a clear medium. You have enough flecks and it appears opaque. Remove enough flecks and you see "between" them if you will.DAMHIKT.....lol[^]
