I made a squaring jig awhile ago, and it has worked OK...

Just an old mandrel stuck in a hole in the block of wood... worked OK, but I had to make some bushings (out of Osage Orange) that slid onto the mandrel and fit the inside of the various pen kits... this worked just OK too, but the bushings would slide off sometimes when you removed the pen blank, had to hunt for them, they didn't fit "perfectly" etc...

Then came the idea! .... and have been letting this idea roll around in my brain for a couple of weeks. Well today I went to Lowes and got the stuff I needed... came to $8 and some change...

This one uses those Harbor Freight transfer punches and they are held as seen in the pic... works great!

Rest of the story is here if you're interested.... :)

An idea worked! ... Woo Hoo!

Both are neat ideas Marc. Did you grind or file a flat strip along the part of th transfer punch that is in the pipe so the thimbscrews hold better?

Didn't feel like I needed to... all the pressure is sideways so there's really not any pressure trying to force the transfer punch out of the hole...

I don't know. With all that slop in the conduit I'd be afraid of it moving laterally. I'm thinking some kind of a V-block arrangement instead of the conduit would eliminate the lateral movement. Just my $.02 and worth exactly what you paid for it.:D:D

Hmm... slop? ... there's none at all.

No lateral movement at all....

But hey! ... it works for me... cause I built it finally instead of just thinking about it!

If I were to build it with a v block, then adjusting it square to the disc sander would be a pain... the way this one is built it is really easy to adjust.

Hi, i use a disc sander but i have been just squaring the wood up before i apply it to sander and using a miter gauge to apply it to disc...I have troubles when it is a piece a wood that would take a miracle to square up,or something like deer antler where their is no reference to use. Your idea will be very handy.. Carl
