Spalted Wood

Still new to a lot of this stuff so I have a question about spalted wood. What makes wood spalted? Where do you find it?(besides buying it). I have some large pecan pieces from a large pecan tree that blew over in a windstorm about 3 years ago in my back yard and am wondering if it is or will become spalted? Any info from the smart ones that know this stuff would be wonderful. Thanks.
