Southwest Mesa Penn Stone

This is a PSI Southwest Mesa pen in antique pewter. The blank is a PSI Penn Stone turquoise with black veins. The blank turned out okay, but it's nothing special. It doesn't look any better than the acrylic version. I doubt if I'll buy another Penn Stone blank. It was hard to work, and not worth the extra effort. I finished and polished it with 220-600 wet; all 9 grades of Micro Mesh wet; Meguiar's 105, 205, and #9.

There are white spots in the blank, and I don't know what they are. They're not on the surface, they're inside the blank.

This is the acrylic blank, with a Southwest Mesa antique copper pen.

I think that the stone blank DOES have an appeal that the acrylic "equivalent" does not have.

Granted ... it is harder to work ... and I have no idea what the white specs are (I can't actually see many of those here).

I do like the above pen that you show . . . but, of course, it's all up to you whether you make another.

So ..... having said that ..... I think your pen above looks GREAT !!!! . . Thanks for showing !!!

It's not as heavy as I thought. The Penn Stone pen is 52 grams, and the acrylic is 49.

Very Nice! I like the Southwest pen styles and they pair very nicely with stone blanks, especially turquoise variations. I have yet to make an entire pen out of a stone blank, but I have used it as a material in simple segmented blanks - usually paired with ironwood that came from the Sonoran desert in Arizona and with the Southwest kits.
