I just managed to get all restrictions lifted on use of my right hand after carpal tunnel surgery. Hand is weak, but very little discomfort, and was looking forward to turning again. Yesterday some guy in an old F250 rear-ended my Nissan SUV, and the collision drove my left thumb into the steering wheel, spraining it and tearing a ligament. So now I'm back to having one hand in a splint for I don't know how long!

Very sorry to hear that Sharon , but at least your thumb didn`t break .
So sorry to hear about your accident. That is almost the definition of "adding insult to injury." :-(

I hope you heal quickly.

A note to @1080Wayne: Sometimes a severe sprain or a ligament tear can be worse and take longer to heal than broken bones. Let us pray that isn't the case for Sharon.

Heal fast,.... a thumb injury is much like a sore toe... where ever you walk you tend to stub that toe.... since we use our thumbs often, a sore thumb becomes a real handicap....About 70 years ago, when I was in 4th grade, in a base ball game I was at short stop and caught a line drive, with the wrong hand and sprained my right thumb... I had trouble with that thumb for a number of years afterwards, well up into my teens and maybe afterwards... I didn't have the benefit of a splint back in those days, so I was a little slow healing.... hopefully you will heal much better and quicker than I did.
Also glad that no other injuries from the car crash... rear end crashes can cause serious damage to the neck and body.
I have been rear ended 3 times in my life time... once in my corvette that shattered the rear fibreglass panel and bent the frame... the lady that hit me didn't even try to apply brakes and knocked me across an intersection.... after the car was fixed a guy in a Cadillac smacked the bumper again, but no damage and a lady in an SUV smashed into the rear of my VW and smashed up the deck lid.... fortunately only injury was in the corvette and my head hit the top of the hard top and left a goose egg... none of the others were injurious.

Chuck is right. With some things, I'm all thumbs. Chuck, don't you wish you have your Corvette now? If I had mine, I could pay off my house and buy a new truck.
Sharon, quick recovery for you.

Sorry to hear about this Sharon. On a happier (sorry, not quite sure how to say this), I dislocated and tore up my left thumb playing on the Navies East Coast softball team. I had reconstructive surgery over 40 years ago after multiple dislocations and it's still holding. It was a pain in the A$$ after the surgery but I have a very strong thumb now, better than my right for sure. I hope you don't have to go through this but if you do, it works great, but it is a pain. Best of luck.

Yeah, foolishlike I sold it when I got married first time... she had a 6 year old and there was no place for her to ride... the car would have lasted longer than the marriage. :(

The good news is that it isn't a traditional sprained thumb, which is usually the thumb being forced outward away from the hand. My thumb was bent like you were making a fist and jammed by the steering wheel on the thumbnail side down into my palm. Much easier injury to recover from. Already feeling much better. I was stopped at a light and he ALMOST was able to stop before he hit me, so no whiplash. Skinned my knee a little on the dash.

Good, glad it wasn't worse. I've heard whiplash is really painful.
Fortunately I've never had a whiplash, but my thumb was bent backwards and almost knocked out of joint... 70 years later it still hurts if I think about it... took a long time to heal. Now I'm getting arthritis in my hands so they feel stiff and my grip is getting weaker.

Oh dang, that is a bummer. Glad to hear it bent in the right(?) direction. I suppose it could be worse, then. Still, there's a reason the phrase "sticks out like a sore thumb" exists. Hope it heals up fast!

Years ago I was hit by a semi in my Ford Escort. Got whiplash that time. Thank goodness for Vicodin. He was passing a string of 6 trucks behind me on a long curve. He was looking in his mirror to be sure he was clear of the last truck before pulling back into the right lane...didn't look forward. I was doing 45 mph in the right lane limping into town on a donut spare with my flashers going. There was no access road there. Turned right into the side of my car. We were in the mountains east of Flagstaff and I did three 360s down the middle of the freeway and he went over the rail in a 40' drop. All six of the semis behind us stopped to make sure I was OK. Car was totaled but I just had a half inch long cut on my scalp and some whiplash. Lost my glasses apparently out the broken driver's window. My seat broke and I fell backwards, and a sharp piece of the door cut my scalp as it fell. They airlifted the truck driver out. A friend drove me to the hospital for four stitches. My husband took pictures of the car later and it shows TIRE TREAD MARKS on the roof! No idea! Maybe he used the Escort as a ramp over the edge. The guardrail was still up and the trailer was hanging from the guardrail by it's rear wheels. (The back door of the trailer came open and it was full of produce, and people were stopping along the highway and picking up cases of strawberries, asparagus, etc. LOL)
One Sheriff's deputy said it was the first time he ever saw a Freightliner take on an Escort and the Escort won.

I can't top that one.

Most of the spilled fruit was strawberries and many of them burst on the highway and cars were running over them. The smell of strawberries still makes me slightly queasy.

I would say you are qualified as a "Pro" at traffic mishaps. We are fortunate to have you with us, considering that first encounter. I hope your recovery continues quickly and you that are fully back to you pre-incident 'self' soon!

That I can understand... I worked for TWA for a number of years and one of our accounts was a strawberry grower that would send thousands of pounds of berries eastward... a 707 cargo plane has 13 pallets on board, each capable of handling 6 pallets of berries and we often would have as many as 6 or 7 aircraft pallets of berries... the warehouse would smell of strawberries for days on end....each AC pallet would weigh about 7,000 lbs...
We even dropped an AC pallet off a Corcoran loader which fell about 15 feet to the ground... strawberries all over the tarmac... the ramp service men just grabbed scoop shovels and scooped the up into a cart... what was left on the tarmac became strawberry jam... all the equipment became coated with strawberry mush... to this day, I'm not fond of strawberries....

Yeah, I dislocated my thumb about twenty years ago jumping a horse. He popped his back over a fence and the cantle of the saddle caught me in the backside and launched me forward. I caught just the tip of my thumb on the back of his neck and completely dislocated it. It was hanging down by my wrist! No surgery, they popped it back into place and I wore a brace on it for most of a year and it healed up fine. Same thumb I just sprained.
