So how long before pens are done with this

Pretty Cool stuff. I wonder how it would wear when applied to something that used often, like a pen?

Of course, no mention of pricing. I am sure that someone will try it in the future. When you are working with wood.....I feel certain you want to see the wood.

Perhaps not wood but imagine it on the brass tube that you put in a special PR or Acrylic blank

To be honest if the base is metal you would be better off actually plating it bright nickel if chromium is out of the question for you. simple enough to brush plate straight onto brass.

What you have found here has been out for donkeys years and is the industry standard for manufacturing mirrors, coating one side of the glass in it.

its made with Silver Nitrate & ammonia, along with sodium hydroxide and sugar.

silver nitrate+ammonia=Ammonium nitrate with silver as your by product, which in effect is used to coat the surface.

Heres a how to on the process:

There's always a Party Pooper!!! :)

But seriously, when they need to get a celeb to endorse a product, you should know it's just another ad. :(

Sorry skiprat, I don't think you understood what you were looking at. Jay Leno is the ultimate Car Guy in the United States and maybe the world. The clip that you saw is one of many that he has posted on You tube to show innovative ways to modify or restore cars. He has a mass collection of rare and one of a kind cars that he shares with others. As far as the process he is showing, as Brad said , it has been around for years. In the states we can get spray paint that looks and feels like chrome, brass, silver, or gold. I have used this in restoration work for many years. Many of the chromed plastics you see today are done with this process. It is almost impossable to get anything chrome plated in the USA any more. Also I don't think Jay needs any endorsement money. Another car guy. Jim S

No offence intended Jim
JL's love of cars extends to the UK too. He really does have an amazing collection !!
But lets be honest OK? He can afford that collection because of his TV programs and his endorsement of products.
Do you honestly think he didn't get paid to do that ad?

Well, I doubt he got actual Greenback Sawbucks.. But anything he needed "Chromed" was done for free. Beside this is You Tube not MSNBC or the Velocity Channel. Which when he ACTUALLY Retires... Again... perhaps he will have a similar show as such.

But back on subject kinda, this would not be a logical step in making a tube "chromed" instead of painting it a silver or a color equal to the acrylic blank?

Absolutely, though keep in mind its not so durable. granted it would be protected by whatever its cast in, though for the money you would be spending on silver nitrate, ammonia, and sodium hydroxide, you won't be very far off the cost of a 5 litre replica chrome plating system, which would set you back around £90.00 from gateros plating. Much more durable and great results

more over, the fumes you give off when doing this, are not good! so be sure to have good ventilation if you are planning on giving it a go.

I looked into that stuff a while back. It seems quite versatile and can be applied to about anything. It comes in spray cans as well as larger cans to do larger surfaces with a spray gun (like maybe a whole car).
The problem is it is really expensive stuff to just buy to try out and I haven't seen anyone using it or looked at the results close up.

Things that look really easy to do on videos can sometimes be really expensive to learn how to use since it takes a good deal of pracitice to get to where you can make it look that easy. I imagine people doing auto painting and such would be able to master it almost instantly, but I don't think I could and I don't have the spare cash laying around to find out yet.
