Mine started out weird and has not gotten any more normal. Here is what happened to set the mood for the day.

I am a teacher, I teach remedial reading to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders (11-14 year olds). The school forces me to use a scripted program.

1st period
As usual I split the class into their leveled reading groups. I got to work with the really low ones today. This group has 1 eighth grader, 1 seventh grader, and 2 sixth graders. The class only has one girl in it. We went over the script, we read the paragraph and I start asking the kids questions and explaining the instructions. They filled out the worksheet after I talked about it. Then I pick a student to say their answer and say why they wrote it. It is a very regimented program and I hate it but I have no choice. I asked the eighth grader for an answer: Names changed to protect my certificate

Me-"Bob, on what line of the paragraph did you find the address of the college?"
Bob (8th Grader)- "Breasts"
Me-"Those are not considered an address"
Bob-"But why do girls show them off so much, in their tight shirts all open on the top"
Joe- (6th Grader)-I never noticed
Me- "Not a conversation we need to be having"
Bob- "You don't notice cuz 6th graders don't have them yet"
Joe- "Mr. Haynie when do they get them?"
Lone girl reading in the corner - "Mr. Haynie!!!!!!"
Me-Saved by the bell but I get to address this tomorrow because part of teaching middle school is teaching these boogers how to be human again.

In second period I had to explain to a couple of sixth graders that, just because they have begun noticing the girls' bodies does not mean that they need to discuss their observations where girls were present, especially the girl they were observing. This class is half 8th grade females and half 6th grade males. I was talking to them quietly and did not notice the girl they were talking about come up behind me. She agreed with me and said she would "beat the sh*t out of them if she saw them looking at her again. She would do it too. She is at least 2 feet taller than they are. Those two little boys would not even look at the side of the room she was sitting on. They answered questions looking at the opposite side of the room.

Puberty; never a dull moment :bulgy-eyes:

Wow, that got me laughing, especially the part about the 6th grade boys who wouldn't even look at the side of the room where the tall 8th grade girl was. Hopefully they learned something about not treating women as objects ! Or at least they learned to shut up around people who are bigger than you are.

My wife is a 6th grade teacher in IL, so I hear some funny, funny stuff from her too.

Good luck tomorrow.

I was up on a roof trying to find a leak for a customer. I found the leak and also found that their satellite dish was wobbly. I took a picture of the damaged shingles and was sending her a text that was going to say "I found the leak and need to tighten your satellite dish". I actually typed "I found the leak and need to ti" and then started sliding down the shingles. I somehow hit another "t" and then send so she got a picture of her damaged roof and a message that said "I found the leak and need to tit"

Luckily, she's a good sport and replied back "Maybe you should send this to your wife instead?"

Puberty is a real pain. I'm only 24 and I wouldn't do it again if my life depended on it.

Are you using Success For All in your scripted class?

No, Corrective Reading. Old, but better than Read 180 which is what I had to use last year.

I would probably quit if I had to use Success For All again.

No scripting is not limited to Texas. Now that California is getting rid of it I am sure we will be as well in a few years.

I like these guys but man today was weird. We are desert rats and the weather is cloudy and rainy. I will blame it on that.

Ahhh the day is over, it is raining, I am waiting for the shipping company to come haul away a big crate of boat propellers I sold. Might even get some time at the lathe while I wait.

Classic school! I am in advanced classes, so we never had those kind of talks in class, people were smart enough to discuss it at cross country practice! Weird stuff always happens at school, like when you are a senior and you hear an excuse me while walking through the hall. Everyone else is talking with their friends, nobody is looking at you. You look down and there is a girl who barely comes up to your waist pushing through the hall...

give them a computer, show how to use google, they can join the rest of the kids in the world and teach themselves to read at the same time  ....just think how many people learned to play poker that way

What ever happened to Phonics and sounding out the words?

Depends on where you are. Phonics is important for word recognitions and an essential base skill. Every one of my students are very good word readers. Their abilities stop there.
