Well like many here we got more snow today. On a whim I went across the street and cleaned three of my neighbors driveways and side walks after I finished my own. All three neighbors are well past 70 and have not been able to get their snow removed. They worry about how an emergengy service vechicle would come to their house if needed. My snow blower made short work of the three jobs.
The first fellow watched me out his window and waved his thanks. The second one came to his front door and we talked for a few minutes. The third one did the same then asked me if I used my fire place. Mentioned that they had firewood out back and wanted to get rid of it. Went around back and found some of the most rotten, wet, decayed firewood you can envision. Told them I would take care of it.
I went home and brought my little red wagon over to load up the firewood. Swapped dry, seasoned firewood off my pile for their old stuff and hauled it back home. Repeated it two times to get all that nasty wood out of there. Took an armful of the dry wood into their house and put it in their fireplace. Told them that if the electric went off they would at least be able top keep warm. They are happy for the wood and I got a ton of old, semi rotten wood in trade.
Now funny thing is that we both think we got the best of the deal. One stick of the old firewood yielded over three dozen spaulted pen blanks. As we often say I hit the mother load. I want to proscess more of the wood this weekend. You never know what rewards you get when you help a neighbor. Their thanks was more than enough but the wood was a real bonus.
