This link will take you to a story that appeared on the evening news in Nashville on how thieves are using the smart reader and how they can intercept the signal from your smart reader because it is not secure. I don't know what can be done about accepting credit cards but it looks like the smart system is not the way to go. I am sure the thieves will be using the reader and intercepting the signals more and more until they can encryt the signal some how.

You misread that article a bit. This isn't that they are stealing the signal. This is that they have one of their own and are using it to swipe and steal your data. The bad news is that this is nothing new. There is devices about the size of a pack of gum that can do the same thing with no phone, etc.

Actually alphageek, you misread. It said both things...

"Police also warn that the machines aren't safe to use anyway, even if you're intentionally having your card swiped.

A person with an antenna can actually intercept the information being sent from the iPhone because it's not secure," Carroll said."

Though I have my doubts about the expert opinion in this article.

That bit of reporting is why I don't watch local news.

First, the person obviously doesn't understand that an owner of a square reader doesn't have access to the credit card information, so cannot sell it to anyone. They can make a fraudulent charge, of course, but that can be done with any credit card reader.

Second, the person being quoted doesn't appear to understand how square transmits the data.

They said that people you give your card to ( like a waiter) can use a smart reader and swipe your card and have your credit card information and can get the security code on the card. The other thing they said is thieves can intercept the information from a customer of yours by using a scanner to get the credit card information since the information sent because the smart reader does not send a secure signal.

Another argument for the old tried and true "knucklebuster"... takes a little longer to get my cash, but more secure... at least for me...
My computer at home is on a land line... no signal in the ozone...
I don't own nor need a "smart phone"... I do have a cell phone, but just a basic model.
Hasn't seemed to affect my sales any... customers don't seem to mind waiting while I do the paperwork.
