I was given an old beer barrel from the brewery where I work< Genesee Brewery in Rochester, NY. I estimate the barrel to be used sometime around the '40's, according to the patent number on the barrel (2,098,211). I am still doing research to determine if it is older.
The tubing inside was used to run a coolant though the beer to keep it cold and fresh, quite a revoltionary idea!

The barrel appears to be white oak. It was very solidly constructed. I gently removed the nails holding the 4 metal bands holding it together. After that it came apart rather easily.

I took some pics of the barrel, before and after.

I would appreciate any input as to what I should do with the wood.

Genesee?

Throw it back!

Actually, that looks like a wort chiller. The boiled wort goes in the barrel
and cold water is run through the copper coil. This brings down the temp
quickly so you can pitch the yeast before any stray bacteria gets a chance
to get into the beer.

If you're going to cut some up, I'll trade some spalted wormy persimmon. PM if you're interested.

I just broke open the barrel this evening, it was a little damp on the inside. So I have it set out to dry. The outside is dry as possible. I imagine that the inside wont take long to dry out.

I can spill beer on mine to make it even, if that helps:wink:.
