I was given an old beer barrel from the brewery where I work< Genesee Brewery in Rochester, NY. I estimate the barrel to be used sometime around the '40's, according to the patent number on the barrel (2,098,211). I am still doing research to determine if it is older.
The tubing inside was used to run a coolant though the beer to keep it cold and fresh, quite a revoltionary idea!
The barrel appears to be white oak. It was very solidly constructed. I gently removed the nails holding the 4 metal bands holding it together. After that it came apart rather easily.
I took some pics of the barrel, before and after.
I would appreciate any input as to what I should do with the wood.
