Never one to avoid the opportunity to buy a tool that I am just a financial squeak away from justifying, I bought an Imer Wheelman II mixer to pour a 3x8 slab for a new air conditioner. The calculations are complex, but I can share my "data", which might help you justify your own, plausibly unnecessary piece of equipment.

It's been awhile and surprisingly, you don't become better at finishing concrete just thinking about it since the last time 10 years ago. I am impatient and I trowel way too much waiting for the bleed water.

Anyway, looks good now, old AC goes back on this week. New AC install is next week. The relation to the shop is that I will be able to shut off the existing ducts to the second floor of the house where the new beast will cool, which will leave me more flow of heat and cool to the shop. That's priceless, making the cost of that mixer kind of irrelevant, right honey?

It's beautiful, certainly justified!!!

Now it can rest peacefully for the next decade, occupying 4 square feet of floor space in your nice new, well-organized garage!! Or, in a couple years you can give it to GoodWill and buy another one when you need it next----I understand these plans!!
Been there, done that!!!

On a remodel. Plumber busted up the slab to replace sewer line and relocate lots of water lines. It was back in the winter and too cold to get a cement truck so we mixed and poured it ourselves.. Not fun.

Wow, what did you make? That's a monumental task. At LEAST you should get a new wheelbarrow.

Ouch...! far too many cement mix bags for my poor "spring" however, I've seen a lot worse by so called "professionals"...!:wink::biggrin:

The fact of the matter is that, a man got to do what a man got to do, the tool done its job and it can be sold to recoup most of the investment, what was lost is still a lot less than hire the toll, that you always have to take back while with this one, if you decide not to, its yours...!:wink::biggrin:

You're lucky that you are so far away from me, I need to have to cementing done very soon and I need a "cementer" :eek:, aren't you lucky...???:smile:

Jeff; You didn't go big enough. This is what we used on a Habitat for Humanity project to lay footers for a 3 unit row house. We used 27 yards of concrete (3 truck loads)! I agree with renting as an option.

I was impressed until I saw that pink bath towel under your knees! Real concrete finishers don't use no stinkin' towels! Who talked you into including that pic? LOL
 
We finally wore out our forty year old electric small-batch cement mixer. The bearings totally failed, and we just weren't using it as much any more. But I can guarantee one thing, as soon as your friends and neighbors find out you have it, they will all want to borrow it!
 
I bought a small mixer like that from Harbor Freight quite a few years ago for $150 and used it building an 11 foot tall parking pad on our steeply sloping property. Still got it, still works. I would have spent way more renting one.

Nice work, my back, knees, hip, and arms hurt just looking at those pictures. I have a two of those to pour this year. I'm happily putting them off. Lol

And screw it up. Being an ex-mechanic I learned quick to never loan a tool.

Good looking side walk. I got 2 acres of concrete that needs replaced. You game?
 
Jeff I was reading the thread, and was going to submit a pen. My daughter is on my case because I put cement for my boat and patio which she thought should be pavers. Then for Christmas 2011 she gave me a book of things you can make from cement. For Christmas 2013 I made her a pen made up of Alumilite resin and cement powder colored blue. It came out OK. Sacks of cement are not an indication of relaxing work ahead. Good luck. This may be a challenge in the future, a cement pen not pouring sacks>>>
 
That mixer sure would have been a lifesaver while I was pouring the pad for my sawmill to sit on.....little larger then your pad, by a tad. Mine was 4ft wide x 14ft long and 9inches thick, all mixed by hand in a wheelbarrow.

By the way, what are you using for AC while the pad is curing?
