SHOPSMITH CLOSED IN PENS

After nearly 300 pens I'm thinking about attempting closed in pens. I turn with a Shopsmith and am wondering is this even doable with a Shopsmith. If so, what equipment do I need to get? Thanks for the advice.

You will need closed end mandrels. Some make their own, I use the ones from Arizona Silhouette. A 4 jaw or collet chuck is best for holding the mandrel but it can be done with a drill chuck with a drawbar. There is no reason that you can't do it on a Shopsmith.

You can turn them with the mandrel you use for your other pens. No special tooling is needed. Read about making closed end pens at http://www.RedRiverPens.com/articles Find the ones on closed end pens.

I'll take an opposite tack since I have an SS and regular lathes too.

You could mount the jacobs chuck in the headstock or the 1/2" router collet to hold the closed end mandrel.

The SS has a 5/8" headstock quill end. You can get an adapter to convert the 5/8" quill to a standard 1"x8TPI head stock thread. Then you need a collet chuck to hold the closed end mandrel. SS sells a Nova G3 chuck that fits the 5/8" quill, so you might be able to mount the closed end mandrel in that.

I got the 1x8 adapter offered by PSI, along with one of their Barracuda chucks and it works great on my Shopsmith.

If you have the funds available, I have found it really sweat to have the PSI closed-end mandrels and I use a Beal Collet chuck with the 1/2inch insert which the mandrel fits into. This saves my knuckles and is really a great solid set up. Once you get into closed-end I think you'll find the Beal Collet a very rewarding purchase. When you order the PSI mandrels it comes with a very helpful DVD on turning closed-end pens! Well worth it.
