I just sat down here 40 minutes ago. Was checking out SYOP, about to click on "winged Dragon" and bam..power went out! 30 seconds later, sky went black, rain started coming down so hard you couldn't see out the window, branches and leaves started pounding the windows, including a Robin. The front of the house is painted with leaves now.

Pic 1 : this is what my driveway looks like now. That's a cottonwood branch about 80 foot tall, took out neighbors fence too.

Pic 2 is just my front lawn of destruction

Pic 3 is my backyard with two trees down, one of them is smoldering and charred black. That's a box elder with lots of nice flame in it too. But I know what you are thinking, and no..I don't have time for that, it's firewood.

Straightline winds in that fast moving storm were recorded at 74mph. The power only went out for a couple minutes. The only damage in my subdivision is all on my property !!! :curse:

So the shop will be closed tomorrow. I am grateful of course that it's all superficial damage and nobody is hurt, but I'm not looking forward to spending a few days hauling and cutting rubbish. I swear anytime a large storm comes through and causes damage, the entire neighborhoods trees, leaves and branches end up at my house...and I live in the center of the neighborhood, not at the end

Looks like you went to a lot of trouble to put the flame in that box elder.I just looked at strikestatUS and Mi. has had about 3000 ligtning strikes in the last hour and about 13,000 in the last 24 hrs. Keep your head down.

How many times do we have to tell you ... STUDIO!!!!

It sucks to see stuff like that happen, but I'm glad nobody was hurt and there's no serious damage.

I can see a few bowls and a heck of a lot of pens there. I've been watching that storm and it's heading my way. Should be here about 8-9 pm. I've got 4 large maples on the property close to the house 2 of them in the 75 foot range. I worry about them and the house every time I see one of these storms.

Glad it's only cleanup damage for you.

I lost the right rear quarter panel or box panel, whatever you call it, on the back side of my pick up truck too, it's mangled up pretty good from flying trees. It's raining again. I did manage to pull that huge hanging branch down so it's not a safety concern anymore, but it took down the rest of the neighbors fence at the same time!

I didn't have any huge "studio" plans for tomorrow anyhow. I'll probably be out there for a couple hours early morning and then get the bon fire going. The wifes kids volunteered to come over too. Now see..if you live near me and want beautiful box elder..well that's in the back and won't be all cleaned up tomorrow, so you have time to come get some!

My daughter and SIL live in Milford MI. They were held back in Wal-Mart because of the storm. MapQuest shows Milford -- Eatons Rapids to be 115 kms apart.

Glad you r ok and it's not worse. Sorry about the damage.
That storm just went to the north of me and power went out just long enough to have to reset the clocks. We are still under severe t'storm warnings, but the tornado warnings are over.

They are saying we did have a twister, right on top of my house and through town too. It was a bouncer that went up and down about every half mile and never made total contact with the ground but was a visible funnel although I didn't see it, of course the rain and wind was so strong you couldn't see a darn thing out the window for a good 30 seconds. Apparently there's major damage in town, uprooted trees and all the power is out over there. I couldn't believe the local tree service came by and gave me an estimate, to remove the two huge branches and remaining stump from the front yard and chip it all up and remove any debris from road and driveway was only $350. I would have thought a few grand. Heck, I think my deductible is $500. So now I just have to clean up all the random branches out front and deal with the backyard. I can't believe all the tornado's going on this year across the whole country, its incredible.

Of course. You are a wood turner. Your house attracts wood (at least MINE does)

Jeff, way glad all you had was some tree damage. We have been watching these storms for the past week here. Luckily all the really bad ones went around us. All we had was heavy rain and winds in the 75 mph range. I really feel for you because we had that little ice storm in 09 that put us out for up to a month without power. Keep your head down.

OH...A Comedian in the group! That was funny, I'll have to remember that line.

YIKES Jeff!!!

Not to rub salt into injury.
We lost power during the storm yesterday afternoon and sometime between 3pm and 5pm today we got power back.

The one tree that got wacked by lightning, that may have some real cool wood to turn. Buddy had some similar lightning struck maple. the Sap instantly vaporized. left a very unique pattern.
Again man sorry about all that happened.

Andrew

Jeff Glad you're alright, I just heard about a Tornadoe in Michigan and was thinking about you and wondering about Wisconsin if they had gotten hit as well, I know what that storm was like, we've had them all around my place with in 1/2 mile. Twice in the past month. Day time they are scary as hell Night time they are absolutely Horrifying. Wish I was up there to snatch the boxelder, but as long as you and your family are OK and the worst is a busted fence and a banged up truck, Congratulations, can you imagine what Missouri was like, or Tuscaloosa?

We lost power for 10 min during storm. Yest I got all trees cut and brush cleaned up, took all day, went into house to take shower and the power went out. Its still out now, went to bed and now going to work covered in dirt, soot and saw dust

Wow, I had no idea, eaton rapids is tornado alley of MI with 146% more tornados than rest of state. The road I live closest to was been wiped out the most times! Looking back I remember last year dwntown was hit twice, in 2008 Bellevue, 1 mile east lost 28 homes, I never made the connection!

I'll take the extra work here and there just to have a nice plot of land like that and not have annoying neighbors on top of me ;)

Yeah the storm stretched from a top line from Grand Rapids MI, to the south boarder of Michigan.

Battle Creek got hammered as well as Coldwater, Michigan. And as I write this... We are under another line of storm watches and warnings...

For those that aren't from Michigan...

Ok..so I broke down and bought a generator...we all know that set me back a grand! There's none in my area, but I had to go to Detroit, so I was able to find one there, and even there I got the second last one. I brought it home and took it down to shop. I checked the lights..and of course the power was still out. So I proceeded to remove panel from box, called the CaptG to verify I know what to do, and wired in a new 30 amp breaker and a 30 amp plug for the genny to hook up to. <we all know where I'm going here!> yes...I finish the wiring. Now I just need to have the genny breaker off. Turn barn panel back on, go into house turn off the main feed and then go get some gas. When I turn on the main feed in the shop..of course the lights come on, the fridge kicks in, the auto door comes on...yea, power is back up and running, no need for genny!:rolleyes:

We had a power outage here earlier too...

No storm, tornado, rain or wind either - just some guys that decided to remove the cabling from the local sub station to sell for scrap :O

Thank goodness for 105ah cells and inverters :) Neighbours weren't impressed that I had power and they didnt hehe
