I guess this means it is time for a new vac.
Too bad too, I had this system working real good.
It has lasted many years and worked hard.
It started sounding kinda strange so I shut it down and then I started smelling it. Glad I caught it before it caught fire.

Taking a break for the week while I shop for a good deal on a new 12 gallon shop vac.

The good news is that I will have a large wheeled trash can!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Cool, looks like you wore down that comm real good. If you have a metal lathe you could lightly turn down the comm, file and clean out the spaces between the bars, and change the brushes. If the windings are not burned or open you would get some more life out of it.

Or, for all that hassle just buy another vac. It might last as long as your old one.

It's been my experience that once the armature has burnt like that it is likely the enamel insulation on the windings has been compromised and it is junk.

Universal motors are just so loud and noisy and are not designed for long periods of use. You would be much better getting a true dust cleaner set up.

New life for old vac

John; I considered the smaller 500CFM unit but there just isn't enough room in either the budget or the shop. By budget I mean that considering the amount of time I am in the shop and the number of projects I do, it just wouldn't make sense.
However, my temporary solution was to use and old upright sweeper motor/impeller unit inside of the old shop vac guts. Now I don't have to change any of my hose setups and the separator can still be used. With a bit of cutting and some hot melt glue, the motor/impeller unit fit right inside the old cavity. I'd say it works as well as the original and is a lot quieter. It will do for now.
