Hi All,

Ideas and questions to bounce off y'all.

I currently have a 1 1/2 horse Craftsman dust collector with the stock 30 micron bag. It was a gift, so the price was right and until I get the whole setup the way that I want, don't worry, I wear a respirator.

So the first thing I want to do is get the 1 micron pleated filter from PSI http://www.pennstateind.com/store/DCANISTERS.html for the DC. Should be a good start. Ideas / other options?

Next is I want to build my own general air filter. I do have a furnace blower, although I'm open to putting other fans / blowers in there. My shop is a 3 stall garage so I will do the math for CFM. I am planing a couple of pre-filters, but my biggest question is (I saw this somewhere, but I can't find it now) that I want to put a 0.5 micron bag filter? in there too but I can't seem to find a source. Any ideas?

If you have other thoughts or plans for an efficient filter I am open to those.

Thanks,
Dan

Firstly skip the PSI and similar paddle cleaning imported filters and get an industrial filter like a Wynn for your dusty.

http://www.wynnenv.com/cartridge_filters.htm

They are able to filter finer particles and a pair would be in the same price range with greater filtering area. They are also better built and will last longer.

If you made your room filter using one of the Wynn filters it would perform better than the .5 micron bag.

The reason I vote for the industrial cartridges is, I took a bunch of used Torit brand ones that were being tossed from work to a filter cleaning company near here for cleaning. The owner said the ones I brought in can be cleaned as much as ten times with their equipment but he won't touch those import paddle ones because they fall apart if you try and clean them at all.

Thanks for the great hints guys. I will definitely convert my DC to the Wynn filter.

Pete, one question. You mention using one of the Wynn filters in the ambient filter unit. I'm sure I can design a unit that would work with the round one, but did you have another filter style in mind for that one?

Thanks again,
Dan

I meant the round cylindrical ones but if you can find filters of other shapes then by all means use them. You can check with the people at Wynn about theirs but most makes of dust handling equipment for industrial stuff have the air flowing from the outside of the filter towards the centre, not like you usually see with the small units from inside to the outside. Look at all the different types of systems in the link below and you will see what I mean. It should give you some ideas on how you might make one of your own.
