I have the Beall Treen Mandrel, which works great. There are 2" expansion rings as accessory items to the Treen Mandrel. These rings have a set screw to firmly attach them to the Mandrel.

I'm in the process of making some slightly larger expansion rings from 2 1/2 inch aluminum discs. Question: What is the best way to create the threaded hole for the set screw to fit into? Use a threaded insert (any special name for those guys)?

Hi John, You could tap straight into the Aluminum Disc or if you are worried about stripping the thread you could fit a Heli-Coil which is like a spring that is used to repair stripped threads. Most Auto Parts Stores should stock the size you need. If you are going to tap straight into the Aluminum make sure that you use a good cutting lubricant.
