Say, does anyone have knowledge of how to apply a seal of some sort to the end of a string, such as a book mark? Lead might be bad stuff, but is there another material to use?

Since you mention lead, are you wanting something metallic and heavy?

If so you could try something like lead free pewter or lead free solder -almost a pewter- if the string will tolerate that amount of heat or if you plan to attach it by forging it on. All the low tempetrature melting alloys such as woods metal I know of contain at least some lead, but if you aren't planning handling it a great deal they would probably be safe for use.

Pewter has a melting temp of about 530°F, wetting the string will let you work the pewter. That is if you want to work it hot, you can cast a disc or any other shape and drill a hole thru the edge from side to side wax the string thread it thru the pewter disc than using punches flatten the disc's center around the string.
All pewter sold today has to be 100% lead free, pewter solder melts at a lower temp then pewter. You can get both at most jewelry supply houses.
Be careful of getting it from the miniature figure casting places, as some of the melts are not totally lead or cadmium free!
