hello,
I was wondering what is the added value, for the purpose of penturing, of a collet chuck over a 4 jaw, self-centering scroll chuck.

I already own a oneway scroll chuck, which according to leevalley should have a runout of no more than 0.005. that seems like plenty, when for example making a kitless.
are there othe cosideration? would you say that re-chucking works better in a collet chck because of the smooth walls? are there situations that a scroll chuck simply will not suffice?
thank you!

It's pretty hard to beat a Oneway chuck, collet chucks are nice, but I think you'll find the run out difference is not much different mostly due to the lathe spindle.
There are certain things where a collet chuck is better, like making parts for kitless pens, but you have one of the better scroll chucks around.

The real difference comes when holding on to stuff. A collet is going to hold more surface area, so you have a stronger grip and less chance of crushing something. You take a drilled plastic tube and put it in a scroll chuck you will crush it really easy, and with a collet chuck it will take far more pressure to crack it. I prefer collets for pens. For large items, you have no choice but a scroll or jaw chuck.

+ 1 on what Jeff said.
