My woodturning club organized a Tool Making workshop a couple of weeks ago. I'm not a metal worker by any stretch of the imagination. I don't really like working with it. I don't know anything about it except for the fact that it's dirty and the shavings are sharp and dangerous. I see it mainly as a necessary evil to make tools that can cut wood
But with the advice and guidance of all the folks at the workshop I'm well on my way to reproducing the Sorby catalog.
I found a piece of 4' oak handrail on the job site last week, so this weekend I finished making the handles for all my tools as well as putting the finished grinds on them. Two 1 1/4" scrapers, one spear point tool, one box scraper, one recess scraper, one shear scraper, one tool rest, two hollowing tools still in progress and an 1 1/4" solid aluminum handle drilled to accept tools on either side.
Not bad for $75 worth of metal.
