I just got my scorpion blank from John and couldn't wait to turn it and put it together. These blanks really are special and John does the Lion's share of the hard work by getting it about halfway turned for you. Taking John's advice, I went with a very sharp skew and took light, light cuts, really just to knock the ends down and make sure that it is totally rounded. Then I moved to my 100 grit shaping tool and used that to get it safely to final shape. I sanded it up to 2000 and Bealled it. Here is what I came up with:
This pen is awesome. I wish that I'd have wiped it better before taking the pic because I see a smudge, but try to imagine that it isn't there.
If you can part with the duckets I'd recommend trying one of these fellas out. I think that this pen will generate a lot of conversation.
