So my wife decided that she would like to change some of our furniture in the house for a different look. We went the normal route and looked at various furniture stores and what she decided to go with was different items made from reclaimed wood.

I said to her that if this was the look she was going for I could easily make her a few pieces for a fraction of the cost, and have a greater pride for the item. Well she gave me that look while shaking her head, saying "ya, I've heard this before. How long to I have to wait for this project?"

Well last Thursday my coworker came in and mentioned that they had started demolition on the old barn on his lot. It had been originally built in the early 1930's and was in pretty bad shape now. They had done various repairs to it over the years, but had decided to finally demo it. My eyes lit up thinking what great timing!

I headed out there Sunday to grab as much as I could and get going on the new projects for her (in my spare time of course ). Sadly I was a bit late as the demo had already started on Friday .

I was able to grab some nice pieces to build one or two of the pieces that she wanted. Here's what I had seen when I pulled up to his place.

Fun stuff to work with. Here's a pie safe I did with 100+ year old barn siding, including detail shot of reusing the old nails. Doors were recycled shutters, even the hardware was recycled from the '60s.

One caution - the old red barn paint may contain led, scrub it down good and give it several coats of poly, and don't use it where it could come in contact with food. And of course watch the sawdust....
