Score! SFFD wood ladder rungs

A while back someone posted a pen made from a wood ladder used by the San Francisco Fire Dept. After some searching on the web, I found out that San Francisco Fire is one of a handful of FD's to still use wood wood ladders (most of them in the Bay Area). I also found out that the SFFD is the LAST dept that still builds and maintains their wood ladders. Some of their ladders have been in service for over 80 years.

Well on a long weekend in San Francisco with my family last week, I was able to score these two ladder rungs from a SFFD wood ladder.

Being a fire fighter in Minnesota, I cannot wait to make some pens from these rungs! BTW, the first pen I make from these will be going to the person I acquired the rungs from.

The woods they use are Hickory and Ash. I think these are Ash.

Very true. If only these ladder rungs could talk. Imagine the stories they would tell
