Satellite PC

Anybody have any experience with this? I live in an area where I have two choices for internet connectivity - dialup[xx(] or wireless. The wireless service has gone down the drain in the last 10 days or so. I can't send email with attachments nor can I upload photos, but I can receive email with attachments. I have to go to work to upload photos. The ISP has so far done absolutely nothing, they "might" come out tomorrow and take a look at my antenna to see if something got goofed up. We already have satellite TV and have never had a problem with it.

Where I live the satellite TV was so unpredictable that I shut it down. Is there any way you can agree to a 3 month term to test it?

Here in eastern shore of MD we have no DSL, no digital cable and OLD POTS (plain old telephone service) wires.

Satellite was the only game when we moved here. Have had direcway-now hughes.net- for 3 plus years. Works pretty well after getting through an absolutely abysmal install. My gripe is dense cloud cover obstructs the signal so you lose weather info just when you need it most.

Now there is a broadband provider in the area for less money, will consider switching when contract expires.

check around for broadband before going satellite.

We're too far from the telco central office for DSL and there is no cable provider that even comes close to where we live. We like the peace and quiet of living in the sticks, but sometimes it really stinks.[!]

Gerry, if you have had good luck with your reception, you'll probably do okay. It would certainly beat dial up. I've had Dish (but not their internet service) for five years, DirecTV for four years before that. Dish beats Direct hands down. I only loose signal during VERY heavy thounderstorms. That translates to about twice a year. And I wouldn't want to be online during a thunderstorm anyway. []

Gerry, I had Starband which is Dish Network's version of the eye in the sky and it was great and you even got $5 off your satallite service and also off the Dish service. The reason I left them after several years was that they had their satallite go down and told me that they were not sure how long it would be down, could be months they said. So I do accounting at home for another business and needed better than dial-up. I switched to DSL right away and then 3 days later they said it was fixed after I had signed a DSL contract. So I don't have them any more. It was good though and only a really severe rain or dust storm affected it. It ran me about $80 a month.
