What do you sand ON WOOD to before applying your finish?

It varies depending on the wood, but generally 420...

Sorry, I meant to say this is for general wood blanks. For example, it is not for PR or desert ironwood and the likes. Just a general rule of thumb.

I voted 800, but always hit it with 0000 steel wool as the REAL last step prior to the finish.

Before applying CA, I make a final pass along the blank with my rounded skew laying flat on it's side like a scraper, and just "kiss" the blanks for a few passes, creating a very fine dust along the skew cutting edge. No sanding necessary. Apply the CA, then on to the MM & polish.

I voted 600 and I too also hit it with 0000.

To add to the choice, I sand to 600 and then BUFF with clean soft wheel. More shine before CA.

I go to 220, then apply a ca finish. I don't notice a difference between this and 12,000 mm.

I sand the wood through 1200g (chose 1500 in your poll), apply CA, then sand the CA 600g through 12,000MM and polish with Novus #2.

I sand every material to 12,000 before applying any finish. Am I wasting time? MAYBE! When I selll a pen ( also made msuical instruments, at one time), I know that I have made it as well as I can possibl make it. The wasted time is made up with good sleep.

Actually after 400, I use 0000 steel wool length wise before finishing.
