Sanding Disc on Lathe?

I want to start making celtic knot pens and understand that you need perfectly square blanks. Is there any reason I couldn't chuck a sanding disc into the lathe instead of buying a stand alone machine? I'd have to rig up a table but that shouldn't be too difficult.

Add a miter gauge slot and this one looks like a winner.

and a saw blade for the headstock of the lathe too, saw to cut, disk to sand, drillbit to make hole for mandrel, everything in 1 :biggrin:

I have been chucking my blanks and turning the ends square with a spindle gouge, then a touch with sandpaper. You can see and feel the end of the tube before you get to a metal on metal contact. This is done after they are drilled on the lathe and the tubes are glued and dry. Use a brad point drill and clear the bit about 3x. Go slow on the tailstock_drill combo but I keep the rpm high. Takes all the guesswork and frustration out of the problem. It means getting the 60d tail cone to center the blank but the extra time and effort is worth it to me. Phil

Brad, absolutely right, some folks posted their lathe-sanding disk and platforms with miter gauge at IAP. Could not find example in Library.
