Wow, I didn't expect sanding to make this big of a difference. There was a small spot where the CA separated from the wood at the end of this one, so I just cut it down with a skew and refinished the CA on the end. I didn't sand it before finishing, thinking it would pretty much just make it worse. Now I have a darker ring on that end. Obviously, it doesn't stand out this much when you aren't zoomed in larger than life, but it still bugs me since the pen came out great otherwise.

And the reason for this is when you sanded you closed the grain some according to the grit of the paper. When you just used the skew it left the grain more porous and thus a darker ring. CA is a top coating finish and all finishes will change the look of wood depending on the color of the wood, the grain pattern of the wood and also the sanding grit it was taken to.
