I am in the process of looking for a sander to square pen ends and to do some segmented turning. I wanted to get some opinions. I have looked at everything from the Shopfox down to the Ryobi. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a Jet and have to watch the support plate ALL THE TIME. It seems to have a mind of it's own and constantly changes from where I set it. I recommend that you look closely at the attachment points for the plate, and if it looks "flimsy" or like it will not hold under normal use, then I might consider another manufacturer. Ture on the display and watch for movement - if they have one set-up. If not, then ask about this 'problem." Other than this 'problem', I like the Jet. [:D]

I have a older small craftman and it is great . I duno about the small newer ones thou . mine is about 5 or so years old . The new one is only a 1/3 HP . The support plate on my older one staYS PUT WOULD HAVE TO CHECK THE NEW ONE . Mine is a 1/2 horse . IF you can find one there perfect for what you want IMO. The main thing is the support plate I agree it has to hold well or its useless.

Joe, I think the table supports are more a more important feature than brand. With the emphasis being "square" any table only supported on one side is likely not going to give you the accuracy that you need for squaring pen barrels. That being said, I haven't seen a 6" disk sander that had table supports on both sides, so I wouldn't trust one.
