Have heard reports that a few of the local turners are using s salad bowl (nontoxic) finish on their pens. Went to Rockler and looked at the can but for the life of me I cannot figure what the stuff contains. Anyone know what generic type of material is in a "salad bowl finish". They also have a wooden toy finish that is probably the same thing. Just trying to see if it is worth trying and is it durable. Thanks.

I have seen Walnut Oil labeled as salad bowl finish and have used it some. I like tung oil better but I haven't used the walnut oil on pens. The other salad bowl finish I have used is not labled as to contents, kind of scary now that I think about it. The salad bowl finish I used never really hardens, just soaks in and needs to be reapplied periodically. I have used tung oil finish from Minwax on pens with good results but not sure about durability in the long run.
