An Obituary printed in the London Times - Interesting and sadly rather true.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations wer e set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burgla r could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

The obit is a few years late. Even in the '30 he/she was getting scarce. The great Will Rogers proclaimed, "Common sense is altogether too uncommon!" So the obit should have been written somewhere around 1950.
I'll stop here, this is one of my favorite soap boxes/stumps. If you are old enough to understand the soap box/stump thing, my condolences. You are an official old fart.

Maybe we'll be lucky

At least some of us are lucky that we probably won't live long enough to see the full consequences of the directions the lives of people are going today. The new rules of thumb seem to be "If it makes sense - don't do it" and "If it makes no sense at all - it must be right."

Three city workers were on our street this week trying to replace a utility pole damaged by the ice storm. They dug the hole and placed the pole in the hole.

Then two of the workers held the pole steady, while the third worker climbed the pole with the tape measure. The two workers were having great difficulty holding the pole steady in the surrounding ice, while their partner climbed the pole.

Trying to be helpful, I suggested "why don't you lay the pole on the ground to measure it/"

One replied, "We already KNOW how LONG it is, we need to know how tall it is"

It was all I could do to NOT say "here's your sign"

Andy, PLEASE tell me you are joking.

Nope, not joking! They didn't have the skill set to measure the length of the pole and subtract the depth of the hole! They had to "TEST FIT" it. Of course, they were on overtime and could have just been chewing up the clock, but I STILL don't understand why they couldn't send up the bucket truck and drop the heavy end of the tape measure?

Relax, it was only the cable crew!. It's not like they work working with REAL electricity!....oh wait...those utilities are on the same pole!

If it's not broke, it needs fixing.
If it's fixed but not working properly, give them more monies to trying again.
If it's a GOD given RIGHT, then it needs to be taken away....no free thinking allowed.

Somedays your the windshield, somedays your the bug.....we have all just been made into bugs.
