I noticed when using my 46-460 that while running it was making a rumble-like noise, coming from the headstock area.Normally I always have the DC going with my earmuffs on,but this time I was running just the lathe.

It was almost an erratic clunking noise, and I could feel it when I rotated the handwheel, and if I took off the belt tension,I could feel the wobble in the left side when I shook the handwheel.I thought it had a bad left side ball bearing.

So I got the maual out, & loosened the 2 setscrews, set the indexing lock, then turned the LH threaded wheel off..........now no wobble when I shook the shaft.....So I put the wheel back on,and made sure it's on all the way,& tightened the screws and now its silent, just like when I got it.

I don't know why,but am glad it's fixed.Just thought I'd pass my experience on,in case someone here comes across the same thing.

This has happened to others too, including me, but the casue was the lower pulley. It happens when the upper and lower pully are not in alignment. For me it has not recurred since the adjustment.

Sicne it has happened to me and others, I would conclude that occastionally the set screws on the pully sometimes are not tight enough from the factory. Must happen up top too.

The setscrews were tight, and they even had round marks in the shaft from bottoming out, that's what I don't understand.....it's just weird how it got fixed by reassembling it, really strange!
