Of something I saw while researching my old posts. I was looking for a post I made years ago and saw this. I didn't want to steal his post, so here is the prediction that Eagle made on 12-06-2006 when replying to my questions about using a more healthy finish. I was on medical disability at the time. I've pretty much recovered, but still have bad days or weeks. Seems kinda creepy, read just a few years latter. Eagle said,
"Everyone is going to die of something.
Hang on a minute while I light another cigarette.
O.K. that being said.
Keep finishing your wood.
It sounds like the alternative sucks.
I'd rather die happy and early than live a long miserable life playing it safe.
BTW there is no such thing as premature death.
I have never seen a contract that stated how many days we are guaranteed."

When I met Eagle in DC, he and I and Lou went to dinner one night. Olive Garden. Not a lot of folks in the place, but we had a gentleman "waiter" who had a bit of a sense of humor in his presentation. Well that was all Eagle needed--after a long day at a pen show, Eagle jumped up and put his arm around the guys waist and started bellowing out a song to serenade the couple across from us.

He had a massive voice but his control of notes was amazing. When we left that restaurant everyone knew who EAGLE was!!
(None of this was "alcohol-aided"-Eagle was a "friend of Bill" (founded AA) as he would say)

To be with him was to "live large". He was unabashed by "societal mores". He respected those that serve our country and was truly grateful to them.

And yes, when I joked with him about smoking in the car, he said we had a better chance of dying on the highway and long life was NOT HIS goal, just GOOD life.

There were many who did not like Eagle--he could be abrasive-- he could also make any moment memorable.

Rich, Funny you came up with that post. Eagle surely lived large, Diane also would spend time on the phone with Eagle and they talked about his singing and when he lived in Key West, He in essence lived as a troubadour and when asked for his address would give 1967 Nova...that was the car he lived out of. Yes he lived large.

Had this conversation with him on more than one occasion. I loved talking to Eagle and surely wish I could have seen him perform in Man from Lamancha - once they finally found "Nova Street" (errrr made contact with Eagle ... ) that was a chance he couldn't refuse - He left Key West the same year we went to Florida diving the first time on our honeymoon - we spent one day in Key West that year (Remember that one dad?) and it has been our "second home" ever since. Had Eagle been known to us at the time I would have begged him to sing at sunset on Malory Square, I'm pretty certain that would have just shut down the other acts!!!

That's a better plan in theory than in practice.

Many times, the period before the end becomes too long and miserable for these folks and their families.
