I find that when I drag my spindle roughing gouge across the tool rest, I get high and low places; SRG hangs up. The tool rest is a steel bar welded to the body; have another like it. I swapped out for another tool rest that is a solid casting. Problem solved. However, the other two too rests are the ones as described earlier. Tried filing it but that is an exercise in futility. Any suggestions? BTW, my son had access to the machine shop at work.

I have the tool rest from Rick with 2 lengths of rest and one post. The rest is easy to change. I am very happy with them. I have a home made parting tool made from an old drywall saw. I ground the teeth off and shaped the point for a very thin parting tool. I found that is made a very slight groove in a couple places. No other tool has ever marked it and I use it all the time. I will soften the sharp edges before I use it again.
The groove has not been a bother, but I plan to remove it on a friends mill and make a flat top rest at some point.

I also had Rherrell tool rests (loved them), but some medium - fine sandpaper grits fixed this in 30 seconds. Minor monthly chore. Not even worth worrying about.

Yeah, I didn't mean that removing the tiny groove/scratches made by my homemade parting tool would difficult. They are not deep enough to need removing. If you haven't seen one of Rick's tool rests, they are polished to a mirror or near mirror finish so small blemishes are noticeable. I also have some tool rests I have had since pre-2012 that have a piece of drill rod about 3/16" welded to the top edge. They are smooth, but I like the larger diameter of Rick's tool rest. Not sure, bit I think the two I have are 4" and 6".

So what do I do with the three? The cast iron one is good. Easy to file down but the other two would take a bit of work. Will ask my son. Owes me big time for braces, clothes, car, wedding, etc.
Can you post a pic? I'm curious about this. Is it not flat from warpage caused by the welding?
