Besides Maple, what would be a good choice of material for a rolling pen?

Next I'll be asking to locate a piece of stock to use for this project.

I would have thought cedar might be a bit soft for that application. Would look nice but might not hold up to use. I could be dead wrong, that is why I am asking.

It's only gotta be harder than the dough, right? ;) I have never made one, was just going on the asthetics of the design.

Hi Landon,
One of the best woods for food contact is American Sycamore. Hard enough, no alergy problems and no taste transfer.

Balsa, if "Mrs. Landon" has a "Swedish" temper!
Well I've been teaasing my wife but truth is it is actually a gift for my sister-in-law. But I probably better back of the jokes or I will be testing the human vs rolling pen collision. :beat-up:

Thats the one I was thinking of, just could not find it. Thanks. Any Idea where to go about getting a block of it?

No idea, in your neck of the woods. I've got a couple hundred board feet of 1" quartersawn stuff. I suppose I could glue up a block but shipping cross border seems to take a couple weeks. At least that's what it takes for blanks to get to me. Probably too late for Christmas gift. PM me if you want to try it and I'll give you enough.

I want a finished barrel of 3 x 12 inches , it might have to wait until her b-day in June. I can probably get by with a fancy pen until then.

The largest piece of koa I have is 33x3x4 but it has a natural edge that narrows down to 3in at the 12inch mark. It would be touch and go. Of course there is always Ebay.

Just remove the clip and you'll have a rolling pen from any material.

Now, a rolling PIN, made for mom to make pies, can use nearly any wood. Maple, cherry, walnut are common -- tight grain is nice, I wouldn't recommend red oak, but possibly white oak.

Just a few ideas.

I wanted to make a rolling pin for my wife but I was going to go out andcut a thick branch of Mesquite. Heartwood/sapwood mix.

Will make everything taste like BBQ.

last weekend I used some 3/4" boards of Walnut/Cherry/Mahogany/Birch on a bias. I have to turn the handles this week.

If you have the first issue of woodturning design, it is one of the first projects.

Good Luck!
Chris

I was gonna make my wife a rolling pin but I started wondering if she'd use it.....on me!

Landon, Seriously I've seen some really nice ones made from gluing up purpleheart, yellowheart and maple and cutting it on a bias. Made with these woods I'm sure you'd need to put a pretty good food safe finish on it.
