Road trip to Alanata GA

I will be taking the next two weeks and traveling to see some people. Alanata is my final stop for a few days. I have things to do and people to see there but am asking if anyone 'knows' of something I shouldn't miss. Going to have a couple of days to myself to see what I want and be with people I hope to see.

This is a business, personal, holiday trip. Nothing set in stone.......plans can get changed quickly. More for the fun of being away from the BS of business, phone. (Sadly, can't turn the cell phone off completely.) Seeing something new and connecting with people I want to know better.

Wayne I've only gone once but this place is pretty cool, an absolute ton of wood.

There's a Woodcraft and Rockler a little north of Atlanta.

Touch base on when you can get together and we'll see about getting some of the local folks together. Next Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evening should work for me if you will be in the area by then. If you are driving and have a little extra room let me know I may have to put together a southern hospitality package for you. :biggrin:
 
If you're looking for non-woodworking ideas. The GA aquarium is amazing. Piedmont Park is a nice place if you're looking for an outdoor walk/scenery/view of the City. Stone Mountain is another cool place to visit, very cool sight to see and hike.

If you like barbecue, Jim & Nick's is a great restaurant. For Pizza, I recommend Mellow Mushroom. If you want a fancy restaurant with amazing food, Canoe is a great place nice view overlooking the Chattahoochee. Quite a few breweries in the area if that appeals to you as well. Let me know if you need more info.
 
Because I am driving ..... I am not setting a complete time table. Leaving tomorrow and hope to be in Indy by Thursday night. Leaving on Sunday and hearing for Alanta Expect to be there for 5-6 days.
Yes, I am driving an empty van and will be looking for some good buys. Things that are not here in Minnesota. And of course, the wonders of picking up wood and remembering the places I got it.
I am just an average guy doing something different for a change before I can't do it in the future. We all talk about living each day like it is our last. Now that I am 62 my attitude is changing. Some people say for the better. Today is #50 without a cig so you could maybe call this a reward to myself.

Warren, Your phone number is with me and I do plan on calling when I get there.

Wayne welcome to Ga. and congrats on 50 days without a cigarette. Hang in there i`m working on year 13. Have a safe trip.
 
Today is 53 days and I am here with Chuck in Indy.
Going to get a pen making lesson tomorrow on a metal lathe.

Had a wonderful supper last night with Ed and tonight with Chuck and his bride. Two days and 800+ miles and already I feel like a new man. If everything goes right tomorrow I will get to see the IAP collection and have supper with Mark James and others.

I was reading about the post Bash blues........all I can say right now is that this trip might be the answer for me and you should consider if you are feeling down. Go and see another member........have fun.

Well, my trip is starting to come to an end. Today is #63 without a cigarette and I am feeling a world of difference in my breathing. I have been meeting some of the most fantastic people along the way. Sad to say that I missed meeting a few on my list..... but that is the way of how things went.
I am back in Southern Minnesota seeing some people, checking out some work, visiting with family. Looks like I left the warm weather in Ga. but I see signs of spring even here. Soon I will be back to work but I will always have this trip to keep me smiling through this next working season.

I want to give everyone my deepest, heartfelt THANKS for everything.
This trip and the people mean so much to me, words are not enough to explain just how I feel.

Congrats on the smoke free Wayne! Think of all of the money you saved, not to mention your health. Next stop, 100 days. !!!!

Congrats on the stopping smoking... I congratulate anyone who can get off the nicotine... Like most teens in the 50's & 60's I tried to smoke too, but for some reason to my benefit, I never got the hang of it and never got started. I even tried again when my first wife picked up the habit at 35... still couldn't get the hang of it.

Same with drinking... did a little in the navy and at a friend's wedding reception I got totally wasted and was so sick the next day I promised God to never do that again... 40+ years later, I like a glass of wine now and then, a beer on a hot day, but that's about it... my stepson bought me a fifth of Canadian Mist about 2 years ago... I still have almost 1/3 of the bottle in the cabinet.

On your trip to Atlanta, sorry I missed you, but the past two weeks were so hectic around here with Dr. appointments and other engagements, don't know if I would have been home if you had had a chance to come by.... on your route down, possibly and likely that you came within about 30 miles of my house. Glad you enjoyed your trip...it's always good to get away for a bit, and good to be home again.

Wayne, Glad to hear your trip has gone well and that you were able to get in some much needed time away before your busy season starts! Also very glad to hear that the trip didn't do you in on staying smoke free.

BTW - my wife is no longer pregnant - son #2 was born March 10th. :biggrin: I'll show you a picture of the little guy next time I see you, whether it's up your way, down my way, or somewhere in the Cities that we get together again.
 
14 days on the road.........2900 miles......to many good memories for me.
Got to empty the van and find everything. So much came back with me that I am afraid to let the wife see it all.
This trip helped me so much and I will say again.......feeling blue? Go and see a fellow pen turner. You can't be sad/unhappy/upset when turning a pen with a friend. You don't have to go as far as I did. Just go and meet the other pen turners in your area. You will be surprised on just how much information you can share. Not to mention all the fun that is there waiting for you. You can make it a weekend....

So I don't forget anyone I am not going to mention any names. I will say that everyone was fantastic and it was a wonderful learning experience. Now I have to put the knowledge to work along with the 'gifts' I recieved.

Now going to have to plan another trip for the future.
 
Glad you made it home safely Wayne. It was a good time having you here. Could have made a better pen with more time but, you got the rough draft. :wink: Get some rest!:biggrin:
