Okay- made an order the other day and got it all in today.
Face shield
Amazon.com: Sperian Protection S8500 Bionic Face Shield: Automotive

Easy to put together. The band and shield needed bolting together with the plastic bolts and finger nuts above your ears. It's got a soft pad over your forehead. The knob on the back to adjust tightness is awesome. Just push it in and twist. Very cool.
It's WIDE too. Covers my whole face and entire neck.

Respirator from 3m.
Amazon.com: 3M 6291 Half Facepiece Respirator Assembly Medium with P100 Filters: Home Improvement

It's cheaper to buy a whole new mask than to buy replacement cart/filters. The straps on my other 3m mask were falling apart, too. It would come loose after a few hours wearing it. Not bad - but needed replacing.
I can smell plastics pretty easily through it - not the same as no mask - but I know there's plastic under my nose. With the organic filters on my other mask I wouldn't have smelled as much. Hopefully these filters will be acceptable.
It's also MUCH lighter and my neck doesn't wear out as quickly which is a HUGE plus.

Next up
Center finder.
:)
Amazon.com: Robert Larson 800-2875 Plastic Center Finder: Home Improvement
This thing is bigger than I thought. It easily covers my whole hand if I lay it on there. Works great and no moving parts!

Overall very happy with the whole purchase and would recommend these items to anybody.

It fits under the mask perfectly. It's all very comfortable. The 3M with the big carts would fit under this mask. It's awesome.

I like the looks of that shield, and the favorable comments here and by others. I figure I am probably "DUE" for a face incident, as I have been relying only on my regular glasses for eye protection. Your review just got me over the "hump". Thanks
Steve

After Shawn did all the research, I bought the same thing he did. I got mine this week, also. The hood is really good. It's not heavy and you can forget you are wearing it. (I really did.)

Thanks, Shawn, for your research. Hope you don't mind me looking over your shoulder. I will use mouthwash.

I have the same center finder, and found it a bit bulky for pen blanks. The 1 sold here by cnc cutter (I think that's his ID) works better for pen blanks. But the big one is much better for larger items. If you turn more than pens, you need both.

The center finder is huge, but I like it well enough - especially considering how cheap it is - and it is quite sturdy - so a drop on the floor won't kill it.

Do you think it would easily accommodate the glasses I need to see what I'm doing? I need more than just glasses the more I turn............Thanks

Dave
I have the same face shield (buoght from Lee Valley) and there is plenty of room for glasses. There is a picture on their site that shows someone wearing glasses [here].

It is a great face shield.

Saw this respirator demoed at our turning club last month. Its very cool, light weight and works well. One of those "would be nice to see in person", but it really works. The inventor is published in then recent AAW magazine for his kalidescopes.

Actually, it looks rather ingenious. it looks simple enough, and would probably work pretty well provided CA fumes don't bother you too much. I doubt that those filters would block much other than dust.

EDIT: I just called one of the retailers, and it goes for $50. A little pricey if you ask me.

I have the same face shield and love it.

Does the mask fit well under the shield? How about a picture of someone wearing both?

THe mask fits perfectly under the face shield.
