I have developed an alergy to ca glue. I always have a fan to blow the vapors away from me, but sometimes I still get smitten by the ca. I get like a real bad cold with terrible stuffiness for about 3 days every time I get smitten.

Does anyone have any experience with 3M's R6211 Paint Spray and Pesticide respirator? I emailed 3M and they said it does protect against ca vapors and it is in my price range (about $35).

If you are familiar with it, will it work with safety glasses? with a face shield?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated, also.

Chief - the North respirator is like the ultimate! But because I lost my job on 4/30/09 it is way out of my price range.

This is a bit of a report from a similar thread.....

True allergic reactions to CA are not very common. It is common for people to have irritation from the fumes. The fumes are the CA materials themselves, usually methyl cyanoacrylate monomer and ethyl cyanoacrylate monomer. Those materials will react on mucus membranes in the same way they do on other surfaces -- remember, the CA reaction is catalyzed by water (bases, more exactly).

The recommendations I have for addressing the issue follow. Best is good ventilation combined with a agood dual-purpose respirator (one with carbon cartridges for absorbing the CA vapors and one that also filters fine dust particles -- far more people are allergic to dust than to CA). 3M sells a good multipurpose respirator. Finally, using the "low odor" CA's can help, although if you are truly sensitized they may not help much. The low odor CA's are based on things like ethoxymethyl cyanoacrylate, which has a lower volatility due to its higher molecular weight.

That is the same thing I use. I wear a face shield and glass when I turn and have no problems.
I use the following
3M 6300 Large Half Face.
3M 6003 Org. Vapor / Acid Gas (cartridge)
I bought both the 6200 (medium) and 6300 (large)
The medium will fit my son 9 years old of my fiancee. No way it would work on my face. 5' 9" 230lbs just so you know. Hope this helps so you can get the correct size.

Another option would be to use 5 minute epoxy for gluing in tubes and unoxal water based lacquer for your finish. In this way, you would avoid the issue of CA entirely.

For that matter you could explore lacquer dipping too. Hank Lee is the one to talk to about working with a sensitivity to CA. He just might pipe in here when the sun rises in Japan :wink:
 
I, too, have a sensitivity to CA. I can use it for small fix-it jobs, but anything more and I'm in trouble. I use polyurethane glue or epoxy for my tube glue and Unaxol for finishing. I'm very pleased with these combos.
