I finally picked up a can of Ren Wax as per suggestions on the forum, and I've run into a bit of a problem. I decided to polish a pen that I had finished several weeks ago with it. The pen is Purpleheart wood, and I believe that I finished it with Hut Crystalcoat. When I cleaned the Ren Wax off, it left the white chalky marks that I've seen others ask about. I've seen those marks before, but always right after the finish dried. This is several weeks later, and caused by putting RenWax on it. Any idea what caused this and how to fix it?

Purpleheart has open grain... quite small, but open nonetheless. For woods like this you need to ensure that all the pores are filled before applying a finish. Ren Wax, like most others, dries to a haze. What you are seeing is dried wax in these tiny pores.;)

Even after the finish is on it? I would think that the pores would be plugged at that point. It is also odd to me that it isn't sitting in any sort of grainward direction. How do I fix it, re-sand and refinish?

If you did not seal the pen you will still have pores. To seal the pen use either Mylands cellulose sanding sealer or thin CA.

If you have a buffer you should be able to buff out the residue.

FYI: Hut Crystalcoat is not a durable finish. It most likley has already worn off.

Buff it with a stiff bristle brush or an old tooth brush to gt rid of the excess wax. The wax like to be abused and it should polish up better for the brushing.

Make sure you put the Ren. Wax on real thin each coat. I think it says 'sparingly' on the can. If you've got some pens that seem to have lost their shine, put a 'little' on your fingers & apply it to the whole pen, metal & all. Then lightly buff with a soft cloth. Will really bring back the shine.
