removing bushing chipped CA

I made a Soft Grip pen from a cross grain curly/burly walnut. I put about a zillion coats of ca on because it seemed to absorb it like a sponge. I finally got a really nice finish, but when I snapped off the busihings the one on the CB end of the top took a small piece of the CA with it. I didn't notice it until I had the pen assembled and started to put the bushings in some acetone to soak. I saw a small piece of CA sticking up from the edge of one of the CB bushings. Sure enough, there is a small chip in the finish right at the CB. Is there any way to fix this without sanding the whole thing down and starting over?

PS, next time I have to put on a thick CA finish, I'll take the skew and cut next to the bushings before I take them off!

Build the chip back up with some CA until it is just above your finished CA. Use your skew to bring back down and sand and polish. I have had this happen a few times, and one was on a walnut burl. Had the same thing, kept soaking up the CA, had a thick coat. I thought I cut to the bushing with the skew and when I snapped the bushing off, it happened.

Also, take some Minwax wax and put a little on your bushings before applying the CA. It will help it to not stick to the bushing. At least in this case it would have favored the blank and not the bushing.

Post a pic of the pen before and after your fix.

Here is a solution to that problem. Get a set of "Eliminator" bushings from John at www.penturnersproducts.com. They work great.

It is about an eighth of an inch on the CB. What would be the best way to shorten it. I have used my 1" belt sander to slightly shorten the nib end when I turned it a bit too small without damaging the finish, but never for 1/8 inch. More like a 64th or 32nd. I have a very fine toothed pull saw.

Maybe I'll just turn off the finish and refinish this piece.

+1 for John's elimanator bushings.

If it's any consolation to you, most of us have had that happen at one time or other.
When it happened to me on an expensive (to me at least) kit, I decided it was time to order a set of John's bushings. Waxing what you are using now can help too.
 
Sharon, I'd refinish it. Not sure if it's the angle of the picture, but to me it looks proud of the centerband. LOVE johnny's eliminator bushings.

I'm pretty sure it's happened to everyone ONCE... then they get johnny's bushings and don't have it happen again! :biggrin:

I refinished it. I replaced the bushings with three pieces of brass tube to refinish it so I didn't have a problem

Sharon, put wax on your bushings. This will keep the blank from sticking to the bushings.
